Pearl Berman (Shirley MacLaine) is a recently widowed Jewish woman in 1969 Queens whose husband’s funeral is barely over when Joe Meledandri (Marcello Mastroianni) appears at her door — a warm, persistent Italian man who reveals he has been in love with her from afar for twenty years and would like very much to take her out to dinner. Pearl’s large, complicated and hilariously opinionated family has many feelings about this.
