Laura Reynolds (Elizabeth Taylor) is a free-spirited artist and single mother living in a Big Sur beach house who resists all attempts by conventional society to constrain her. When her son is sent to a private school run by the Reverend Edward Hewitt (Richard Burton), the attraction between them is immediate, powerful and impossible to deny — and equally impossible to act on without consequences for his marriage, career and faith.
Directed by Vincente Minnelli with gorgeous California coastal photography and featuring the Oscar-winning song The Shadow of Your Smile by Johnny Mandel. The chemistry between Taylor and Burton — who were married during filming — generates a heat that no screenplay could fully account for.
