It’s London’s debutante season, and the Broadbents — sophisticated Jimmy (Rex Harrison) and his charmingly scatterbrained wife Sheila (Kay Kendall) — are determined to introduce Jimmy’s American daughter Jane (Sandra Dee) to society and find her a suitable match. Jane, however, has other plans: she’s fallen for David Parkson (John Saxon), an American drummer with an unfortunate reputation.
Directed by Vincente Minnelli with sumptuous CinemaScope colour and costumes by Cecil Beaton, The Reluctant Debutante is a sparkling comedy of manners that captures a vanishing world with warmth and wit. Harrison and Kendall — who were truly married at the time — have electric chemistry. Also starring Angela Lansbury as a scheming society mother.
