He is followed into the valley by a mercenary captain (Michael Caine) and his company of soldiers — and the subsequent negotiation between the scholar who wants to protect the valley’s peace and the captain who has never known anything but war forms one of the most intelligent and dramatically compelling films of its era.
Directed by James Clavell, with a magnificent score by John Barry and extraordinary performances from both leads.
