Master thief John Dortmunder (Robert Redford) barely leaves prison before his brother-in-law Andy Kelp (George Segal) has a new job lined up: steal a rare African gem from the Brooklyn Museum. Simple enough. Except the diamond keeps ending up somewhere else — a swallowed clue, a police precinct safe, a bank vault — requiring Dortmunder and his eccentric crew to hatch a new, equally doomed plan to recover it.
Directed by Peter Yates (Bullitt) and written by William Goldman from Donald Westlake’s novel, The Hot Rock is a wonderfully relaxed, funny and beautifully acted caper comedy — with zero Mostel in a scene-stealing supporting role and New York City itself providing spectacular location backdrop.
