Sonny Steele (Robert Redford) is a five-time rodeo champion now reduced to advertising cereal in a Las Vegas show, dressed in a neon suit and riding a doped-up champion racehorse. One night, he steals the horse and rides out into the Nevada desert — determined to release the animal into the wild. The journalist (Jane Fonda) who follows him discovers that the story is considerably more interesting than she anticipated.
