Description
THE BRINK’S JOB (1978) — DVD | Peter Falk | Peter Boyle | Warren Oates | Rated PG
They weren’t criminal masterminds. They were barely criminals. The vault didn’t know that.
Boston, 1950. Tony Pino (Peter Falk) is a small-time crook who can’t even rob a bubble gum factory successfully. Then one day he wanders into the Brink’s Company headquarters — the most impregnable security vault in New England — and discovers something extraordinary: the security is an absolute joke. A barely guarded fortune is sitting there for the taking. With his hapless gang in tow — including a war-damaged veteran (Warren Oates), a smooth bookie (Paul Sorvino) and a very patient wife (Gena Rowlands) — Tony plans the crime of the century. The FBI spend $25 million trying to catch them. Tony spent considerably less.
Directed by William Friedkin (The French Connection, The Exorcist) and based on the real Boston Brink’s robbery, this is one of the finest crime comedies of the 1970s — funny, beautifully cast and packed with period Boston detail. Academy Award nominated for Best Art Direction.
They stumbled into the biggest heist in American history. J. Edgar Hoover blamed Communists.
