Description
THE ALPHABET MURDERS (1965) — DVD | Tony Randall | Robert Morley | Anita Ekberg | Not Rated
The murders go A, B, C… Poirot goes slightly off the rails.
When victims begin appearing in strictly alphabetical order — A.A., then B.B., then C.C. — Hercule Poirot (Tony Randall) sets out to crack the case before the killer reaches Z. But between a bumbling British intelligence agent (Robert Morley), a mysterious and statuesque blonde (Anita Ekberg), and his own tendency toward inspired chaos, the investigation doesn’t go entirely according to plan.
Directed by Frank Tashlin and based on Agatha Christie’s The A.B.C. Murders, this MGM adaptation plays its source material as broad comedy — closer to The Pink Panther than a conventional whodunit — with a meta opening in which Randall literally walks off a film set and transforms into Poirot. Margaret Rutherford makes a cameo as Miss Marple.
The little grey cells have never been quite so entertainingly confused.
