In a future where all plant life on Earth has been destroyed, the remaining forests survive in giant greenhouse domes attached to spacecraft drifting beyond Saturn. Freeman Lowell (Bruce Dern) tends his dome with passionate dedication — until orders arrive from Earth to jettison and destroy the domes. Lowell refuses. What follows is a meditative, deeply emotional and genuinely visionary science fiction film about conservation, solitude and the lengths a man will go to for something he believes in.
Directed by Douglas Trumbull (2001’s special effects supervisor), with music by Joan Baez and featuring the beloved robot drones Huey, Dewey and Louie, Silent Running is one of the most quietly powerful science fiction films ever made — and one of the first great ecological science fiction films.
