Description

SHOOTING ELIZABETH (1992) — DVD | Jeff Goldblum | Mimi Rogers | Rated PG-13

He had the perfect plan. Then she disappeared. Now he’s the prime suspect.

A delightfully offbeat dark comedy that slipped under most people’s radar, Shooting Elizabeth gives Jeff Goldblum one of his most gloriously neurotic roles — and he runs with it every step of the way.

An American executive living in Europe plots to murder his judgmentally callous wife, only to get accused of actually murdering her when she disappears after leaving him over his own neurotic behavior. Movie Buffs Forever Only before he can go through with it, she vanishes — and the police don’t buy his story for a second, leaving him scrambling to find her before things get truly serious. Encyclopedia.com

Goldblum plays the perfect Woody Allen-esque neurotic — funny, right out there in terms of overplaying every part of his character, and utterly watchable throughout. The film has that low-budget indie vibe that many actually find refreshing, set against the sun-drenched backdrop of Spain. IMDb Adding to the fun is a cameo from Burt Kwouk — beloved as Cato from the Pink Panther series — in a small but memorable role.

A very witty dark comedy that pushes things to the brink. It is smartly written all through and moves at a wonderful pace. Jeff Goldblum shines in this film — this is the role he was born to play. Movie Buffs Forever

The film has some subtle, often unrecognized humor — you have to be alert to catch some of the funnier bits. I’ve always been a fan of that kind of comedy, and this one delivers it in spades. IMDb Think of it as a sun-soaked European take on dark marital comedy, written by the same writer behind So I Married an Axe Murderer.

An out-of-print oddity that fans of Goldblum seek out eagerly — a genuine cult item for collectors of early ’90s dark comedy.
