Penelope (Natalie Wood) is the neglected wife of a pompous banker (Ian Bannen) who decides — in a fit of frustration — to rob his bank. She pulls off the heist with considerable aplomb, then goes directly to her psychiatrist and tells him everything. The resulting comedy of confidentiality, police investigation and marital misadventure is warm, witty and showcases Natalie Wood’s considerable comedic gifts to wonderful effect.
Also featuring Dick Shawn, Arthur Malet and a screenplay by George Wells, Penelope is a stylish and thoroughly enjoyable 1960s comedy romp that deserves far more recognition than it has traditionally received.
