A group of Union soldiers escape a Confederate prison by hot air balloon and are carried by storm to a remote Pacific island — where they discover giant crabs monstrous bees a prehistoric bird and ultimately the hidden submarine laboratory of Captain Nemo (Herbert Lom). Based on Jules Verne’s sequel to Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea this film features Ray Harryhausen’s most inventive and awe-inspiring stop-motion creature effects.
