Melvin Dummar (Paul Le Mat) is a cheerful, dreaming Nevada gas station attendant who stops one night to help a battered old man collapsed in the desert — and listens to his rambling claims to be Howard Hughes (Jason Robards) before dropping him at the Sands Hotel. Years later, a share of the Hughes estate appears — in Melvin’s handwriting. Written by Bo Goldman (winner of the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay) and directed by Jonathan Demme, Melvin and Howard is a small, warm and genuinely extraordinary American film.
