MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW (1937) — DVD | Victor Moore | Beulah Bondi | Thomas Mitchell | Not Rated
The film Orson Welles called the saddest ever made.
Bark and Lucy Cooper (Victor Moore and Beulah Bondi) have been happily married for fifty years. When the bank forecloses on their home, they turn to their adult children for help — only to find that none can take both parents in. Separated and left to navigate the indifference of a busy, self-absorbed family, the couple face an uncertain future with quiet dignity and enduring love.
Directed by Leo McCarey — who reportedly said he received his Oscar that year for The Awful Truth when he should have received it for this — Make Way for Tomorrow is a devastating, unsentimental, and profoundly humane masterpiece. Widely considered an inspiration for Yasujiro Ozu’s Tokyo Story, it was selected for the US National Film Registry in 2010.
They gave everything to their children. Their children gave very little in return.
