MADIGAN (1968) — DVD | Richard Widmark | Henry Fonda | Inger Stevens | Not Rated
Seventy-two hours to catch a killer. The rest of his life was also falling apart.
Detective Madigan (Richard Widmark) and his partner make a fatal mistake letting a violent criminal escape — and are given 72 hours by the police commissioner (Henry Fonda) to recapture him. As the clock ticks and the manhunt intensifies, Madigan’s troubled marriage and his own moral compromises refuse to stay off-screen.
Directed by Don Siegel and based on Richard Dougherty’s novel, Madigan is one of the finest and most unsparing police procedurals of its era — a film that treats its central character as a flawed, fully human being rather than an idealised hero, and is all the more compelling for it. The film spawned a successful TV series and influenced the entire subsequent trajectory of the cop movie genre.
He was a detective. He was also a man with too many problems and not enough time.
