Marshal Jered Maddox (Burt Lancaster) arrives in the small town of Sabbath to arrest members of a cattle drive crew who accidentally killed a man back in his jurisdiction. The town’s powerful rancher (Lee J. Cobb) doesn’t want to give them up. The town’s sheriff (Robert Ryan) is caught between his duty and the peace he has built. Maddox doesn’t negotiate.
Directed by Michael Winner, Lawman is a superbly crafted, morally complex Western about the difference between law and justice — and the cost of enforcing one in the absence of the other.
