Description
LANDSCAPE AFTER BATTLE (1970) — DVD | Daniel Olbrychski | Andrzej Wajda | Not Rated
He survived the camp. He could not survive the peace that followed.
Tadeusz (Daniel Olbrychski) is a Polish poet liberated from a Nazi concentration camp at the end of World War II — now living in a displaced persons camp in Germany with thousands of other survivors. The war is over, but Tadeusz cannot move forward: too damaged by what he has witnessed, too angry at what continues, too in love with an American Jewish woman (Stanislawa Celinska) whose own situation is equally uncertain.
Directed by Andrzej Wajda with characteristic honesty and visual power, Landscape After Battle is one of the most important films ever made about the human cost of the Holocaust and the impossibility of simply resuming life after extreme trauma.
The war ended. The damage did not.
