Unemployed, broke, and speaking passable Czech, writer Nicholas Whistler (Dirk Bogarde) is sent by the employment office to interview for a trainee position at a glass company — which turns out to be a cover for British Intelligence. Before he knows what’s happening, he’s behind the Iron Curtain in Prague, carrying a secret document, falling for a beautiful woman (Sylva Koscina) who may or may not be on his side — and wondering how on earth he’s going to get home.
Directed by Ralph Thomas (the Doctor series) and based on Lionel Davidson’s thriller novel, Hot Enough for June is a witty, beautifully paced spy spoof that captures the perfect balance of Hitchcock tension and British understatement. Robert Morley and Leo McKern delight in their roles as the cheerfully incompetent heads of opposing intelligence services. Also known as Agent 8¾ in the US.
