On 23 July 1983, Air Canada Flight 143 — a brand new Boeing 767 — ran out of fuel at cruising altitude over Manitoba due to a unit conversion error. With both engines dead and no power, Captain Robert Pearson (William Devane) had one option: glide the 100-tonne aircraft to a safe landing on a closed airstrip in Gimli, Manitoba — a former air force base now partly used as a racing circuit with spectators on the runway.
