FAREWELL MY LOVELY (1975) — DVD | Robert Mitchum | Charlotte Rampling | John Ireland | Rated R
Los Angeles. 1941. A private eye. A missing girl. A world that doesn’t want either of them.
Philip Marlowe (Robert Mitchum) is hired by a mountain of a man named Moose Malloy to find his lost girl, Velma. The case leads Marlowe through the low-rent clubs of Central Avenue, the high-society parlours of Bay City, and ultimately to a web of murder, corruption and organised crime that reaches from the lowest dive bar to the most respectable drawing room in Los Angeles.
Directed by Dick Richards and produced by Elliott Kastner, this loving adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s second Marlowe novel restores the story to its original 1940s setting after the 1944 Bogart adaptation. Mitchum is perfectly cast — world-weary, sardonic, quietly heroic — and Charlotte Rampling brings devastating glamour to the role of the femme fatale.
He’d seen it all before. He looked anyway.
