DREAMS THAT MONEY CAN BUY (1947) — DVD | Hans Richter | Max Ernst | Marcel Duchamp | Man Ray | Not Rated
He discovered he could sell people their dreams. He had no idea what they would ask for.
Joe (Jack Bittner) is a down-on-his-luck poet who discovers, while staring into his own eyes in the mirror, that he can see the contents of his own mind unfolding before him — and realise that he can offer the same service to others. Setting up a dream-selling business in his Manhattan apartment, Joe provides his neurotic and frustrated clients with seven extraordinary, tailor-made visions, each one created by a different avant-garde artist of the era.
Shot for $25,000 in a Manhattan loft and produced by legendary art collector Peggy Guggenheim, Dreams That Money Can Buy is one of the most remarkable films ever made — a Dadaist and Surrealist anthology featuring dream sequences created by Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Alexander Calder, Fernand Léger and Hans Richter himself, with music by John Cage, Darius Milhaud and Paul Bowles. Winner of the prize for Best Original Contribution to the Progress of Cinematography at the 1947 Venice Film Festival.
Some things cannot be bought. Dreams, apparently, can.
