Ariadne Oliver (Jean Stapleton), eccentric crime writer and old friend of Hercule Poirot (Peter Ustinov), has organised a ‘Murder Hunt’ game for a summer fête at a splendid Devon manor — but something about the preparations is troubling her in ways she cannot quite articulate. When she calls Poirot in as an expert adviser, he arrives to find that her instincts were entirely correct: a real murder has been committed, the game’s designated victim is genuinely dead, and the beautiful Lady Stubbs has vanished.
Shot on location at West Wycombe Park in Buckinghamshire and based on Agatha Christie’s 1956 novel, Dead Man’s Folly is one of Peter Ustinov’s most charming Poirot outings — featuring Nicollette Sheridan in an early role and Constance Cummings in her final film appearance.
The game had a script. The murderer didn’t follow it.
