DANGEROUS MOVES (1984) — DVD | Michel Piccoli | Alexandre Arbatt | Liv Ullmann | Rated PG
The chess was a battle. The real war was taking place around the board.
Pavius Fromm (Michel Piccoli) is an ageing Soviet chess grandmaster defending his world title against Akiva Liebskind (Alexandre Arbatt) — a young Soviet defector who has fled to the West and whose challenge to the champion is as political as it is intellectual. Directed by Richard Dembo, Dangerous Moves won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film — a tense, intelligent and beautifully crafted film about chess as a proxy for everything else.
The game was chess. The stakes were considerably larger than that.
