His first lieutenant Harvey (Dirk Bogarde) is everything Crawford is not: calculating, cruel, ambitious and utterly ruthless in his use of the disciplinary powers at his disposal. Their conflict — barely contained through duty and the necessities of naval command — threatens to destroy the ship from within even as it faces the French fleet from without.
Directed by Lewis Gilbert and also known as H.M.S. Defiant in the US, this is a masterclass in sustained dramatic tension — Guinness and Bogarde matching each other note for note in a battle of wills that never lets up for a moment, set against the authentic backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars at sea.
