CHOPPING MALL (1986) — DVD | Kelli Maroney | Barbara Crampton | Tony O’Dell | Rated R
Where shopping costs you an arm and a leg.
Park Plaza Mall has just installed three state-of-the-art security robots — the Protectors — to patrol after hours. What could go wrong? Quite a lot, it turns out, when a lightning storm fries the control system and the robots switch from ‘apprehend’ to ‘terminate.’ Trapped inside after a late-night furniture store party, eight teenagers must fight for survival against laser-firing, politely murderous killbots through empty shops, corridors, and escalators.
Directed by Jim Wynorski and featuring cult favourites Kelli Maroney (Night of the Comet) and Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator), along with cameos from Paul Bartel, Mary Woronov and Dick Miller, Chopping Mall is one of the most purely enjoyable B-movies of the Reagan era — fast, funny, surprisingly tense, and completely committed to its own magnificent absurdity.
Have a nice day.
