Strange, stylish, and gloriously off-the-rails, Cemetery Man (Dellamorte Dellamore) is one of the most surreal European cult films of the 1990s — a gothic horror-comedy that turns life, death, and identity into something beautifully unstable.

Rupert Everett stars as Francesco Dellamorte, the caretaker of a small Italian cemetery where the dead have a bad habit of returning to life after seven days. His job is simple in theory: shoot them again and bury the problem twice. In practice, it’s an endless cycle of absurdity, isolation, and existential breakdown.

When a mysterious and captivating woman (Anna Falchi) enters his life, Francesco’s already fragile grip on reality begins to unravel even further — blurring the line between love, obsession, and madness. Meanwhile, his loyal and increasingly eccentric assistant (François Hadji-Lazaro) only deepens the cemetery’s surreal descent into chaos.

Directed with macabre elegance by Michele Soavi, the film blends zombie horror, black comedy, and philosophical meditation into something entirely its own — equal parts grotesque and poetic. Graveyards become labyrinths of meaninglessness, while humor and horror collide in unpredictable ways.

Over time, Cemetery Man has earned a devoted cult following for its dreamlike tone, striking visuals, and refusal to behave like any traditional zombie film. It’s less about the dead rising — and more about what it means to be alive when nothing makes sense anymore.
