Ella Peterson (Judy Holliday) works at a telephone answering service called Susanswerphone — and has a habit of becoming rather too involved in the lives of her clients. When she falls for the voice of playwright Jeff Moss (Dean Martin) — who has no idea who she is — Ella must somehow make their impossible situation into something real. In the meantime, her agency has become inadvertently tangled with a criminal organisation.
