Roger Baxter (Scott Jacoby) is a twelve-year-old American boy living with his divorced mother in suburban England — isolated by his speech impediment, caught between the unsettling attentions of a disturbed older neighbour and a genuine warmth he finds with an elderly Scottish couple (Patricia Neal and Britt Ekland) who become his unlikely allies.
Directed by Lionel Jeffries (The Railway Children) with characteristic gentleness and intelligence, Baxter is a subtler and more psychologically complex film than it initially appears — featuring Jean-Pierre Cassel in strong support and Patricia Neal at her most quietly compelling.
