In rural Pennsylvania in the 1920s, a troubled young man (Chad Lowe) falls under the influence of powwow healer John Reese (Donald Sutherland) — a deeply charismatic practitioner of folk medicine and Christian mysticism who believes he has identified a witch responsible for illness and misfortune in their community. As Reese’s obsession with the supposed witch deepens, his young apprentice is drawn inexorably toward an act of irreversible violence.
